Are you considering using marijuana for the medicinal benefits? If so, you’ll be happy to know that it has a long laundry list of benefits. For brevity’s sake, I’m only going to skim the surface of those benefits right now. My goal is to inform you of the potential benefits of MMJ so you can do further research. How would you know what to research without first being aware of the specific benefit? That’s my job, to bring awareness to the many benefits of the cannabis plant.

3 Biggest Benefits of Cannabis

I would like to first mention that these benefits will vary based on the quality of your marijuana and the strain. Bubba’s parking lot OG Kush probably won’t be as beneficial as medical grade OG Kush or Blue Dream. Also, OG Kush and Blue Dream will have different benefits. Some benefits are universal to all high quality buds, like feeling happier. Of course, the degree to which you feel happier will vary but I’ve never become sadder after smoking. Most of the benefits will vary at least slightly from strain to strain.

1) Pain Management (Indica)

One of the things that weed is best known for is being an excellent pain management tool. There isn’t a better drug for the job, natural or pharmaceutical, in my opinion. If pain reduction or obliteration is the main thing you’re seeking, an Indica strain is what you’re after. There are other things to consider before picking a strain, but don’t go with a pure Sativa strain if it’s for pain. Be careful with Indicas because they can leave you feeling lethargic. There have been many times where I had a powerful Indica and decided to just sleep on the couch instead of getting up and going to bed. Respect the power of the sacred Indica flower.

2) Increased Appetite (Sativa)

This benefit is specific to Sativa or Sativa-dominant strains. The more sativa, the grater your appetite. This isn’t to say that you won’t feel any appetite stimulation with an Indica strain. You may feel slight levels of appetite stimulation, but not a whole lot. With most Sativa strains you will have to force yourself to stop eating. People who are on medication that has a side effect of appetite suppression find this benefit to be particularly helpful.

3) Sleep (Indica-dominant)

Last but not least, we have a sleep aid on our hands. This issue is surrounded by some controversy since researchers have discovered that marijuana, like alcohol, can inhibit REM sleep. I don’t know about you, but I still dream when I go to bed high. What I do know is that I sleep great when I smoke and even better when I have an edible. That’s something I can attest to wholeheartedly. There have been times when I was only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night and nothing seemed to work but marijuana. With weed, I know I can get a full eight hours of sleep without even getting up to go to the bathroom. That’s a feat that isn’t easy for me. It’s rare for me to get a full eight hours of sleep without medicating.
